What a success! 'Global Citizenship' has made us think... - 02 May 2013

What a day!

Key Stage 2 have had an amazing day in our 'Global Citizenship' day.
Diolch yn fawr Mr Jones for organising the event.

As citizens of the World, we have been learning about how we are changing our planet. We need to work together to make a positive impact for future generations.

Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 have been super busy, learning about Fairtrade, participating in African drumming, thinking about Climate Change, Chinese dancing, listening to people from 'Cafod' and 'Europe Direct' and reviewing our environmental effect in school.

As global citizens, we thought about 7 factors which we need to think about when making our world a better place for future generations:

Climate Change
Natural Environment
Identity and culture
Choices and decisions
Waste
Health
Wealth and Poverty

It has been a very thought-provoking day!!

A word from Mr Jones.....

On Thursday May 2nd, KS2 pupils took place in an ESDGC day. ESDGC stands for Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship and is all about looking after the world we live in and making it a better place for future generations. The days was focused around 7 main topics that connected together within the workshops and activities delivered. These included for example; the natural environment, identity and culture, waste, health, climate change, choices and decisions along with wealth and poverty.

The children had an eventful day with guest speakers coming in including a volunteer from the charity ‘Cafod’ who raised awareness and spoke to the children about her work. An African drummer went down well with the children from Year 5-6 as they carried out a session learning about Africa and how to effectively play the African drums together.

Year 3-4 pupils had a super time learning how to Chinese dance. The pupils were provided with various Chinese props and incorporated them into their dancing.

Europe Direct covered the Global Citizenship side by carrying out activities that developed awareness to Year 5-6 pupils of them being a European Citizen. They learnt a lot of interesting facts about Europe and the European Union and carried out some fun activities with a quiz to end.

Other lessons included learning about Fairtrade and why it is important to farmers in developing countries that they receive a fair price for the goods they sell. The pupils also learnt about Waste and carried out an interesting evaluation to discover how much waste we create not only individually but also collectively. Climate Change also provided an insight and a link to waste about how other parts of the world are being affected.

All in all, an excellent day was had by both staff and pupils!
