 In order to live up to the Mission and make it a reality for all the children, full cooperation is needed between all the adults who play a part in their lives at school and home.  To this end the School will always strive to facilitate good communication.
Within a caring and disciplined framework, our School endeavours to provide a balanced education in the fullest sense and to encourage pupils to develop their individual personalities, interests and potential to the full.
Taking all the above into account, the following Aims are designed to achieve the ideals expressed in the Mission Statement.
We aim:
· to deliver the National Curriculum in a meaningful and exciting manner to all
· to develop positive attitudes towards school and education as this in itself is a facilitator of learning
· to encourage our pupils to be creative, independent and self-empowered learners in order to cope with a rapidly changing society
· to help our pupils develop lively enquiring minds, to achieve an ability to question and argue rationally and to evaluate and make judgments and decisions
· to educate our pupils to apply themselves to tasks and to develop anaesthetic awareness
· to help our pupils develop and use mathematical, scientific and technological skills effectively
· to instil respect for religious and moral values and tolerance of other races, religions and ways of life
· to help our pupils understand the world in which they live is varied and differing.
· to encourage children to develop agility and physical coordination, find confidence through individual activities and group activities and be given the experience of participating in a variety of team games
· to encourage our pupils to celebrate their own achievements with humility and be
         generous in the celebration of the achievements of others
· to encourage our pupils to be polite and pleasant, even when under stress
· to encourage our pupils to have high expectations.
· To give our children as many opportunities to learn outside of the classroom as possible.
These are our school ethos and values. We hope that every parent, carer and pupil will embrace our school aims as do all the personnel who work with your chid at school and to this end we request that each parent / carer completes our ‘Home School Agreement.

National Curriculum

 We follow the National Curriculum guidelines:
Literacy underpins and pervades all aspects of education and it is vitally important that each child has the opportunity to acquire skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, i.e. to communicate well and to be receptive to others who communicate.
All teachers are aware that Reading is the key to learning and here in Bryn Hedydd. Throughout the school, we follow a dedicated reading time, 'Amser Darllen' when reading takes place. This happens in each class, from 11.55a.m- 12.15p.m. This occurs in various ways, a teacher reading a class book, children reading individually, group reading or sometimes paired reading.

Our whole school initiative is 'Reading Rocks'!

We encourage parents to read with the children as often as possible. 
Children will regularly take reading books home and where possible parents should give support by:


a) listening and reading with the children
b) indicating in the “home diary” progress made
Children have access to a variety of books in school through the classroom libraries and through the structured reading schemes in operation.
Indeed over the past few years we have expanded our range of reading materials. But remember that your local library has a wealth of reading materials accessible to all.
The emphasis is more on the child improving their own learning and become less reliant on the teacher. With this new switch to improving pupils thinking and skill development the curriculum and how we teach our children will dramatically change over the next few years. Literacy work will become much more cross curricular and linked to almost all other subjects in the curriculum.


Improving Maths has been part of our recent School Development Plan [SDP]

With this in mind, we launched 'Mathletics', which the children have all been motivated and enthused by. Through  this initiative, we hold weekly competitions [Sumdog], interhouse matches and in-class challenges.

Children must still acquire basic number skills through tables, counting, knowledge of number bonds, place value, setting, and shape. We use a variety of resources and texts to support our teaching, thereby affording a strong element of continuity and progression. Above all, we aim to deliver mathematics in a meaningful, relevant and interesting manner.  

As part of our vision to improve maths skills across the school, the Junior children are asked to complete a weekly online homework, using the 'My Maths' program. This is in-line with statutory National Testing.

One of the three core subjects within the National Curriculum. Children are encouraged from an early age to become aware of the world around them and are given the opportunity to experiment in a practical and structured way. Through this “hands on” experience they address the problem, ask questions, hypothesise, predict and interpret their results.

In every lesson, children will be building on skills that they use in Literacy and Numeracy. These are referred to as LNF skills [Literacy and Numeracy Framework skills]

Literacy and Numeracy Framework Skills

Children learn, practise, develop and refine a range of skills in our school. Some of these skills are specific to certain subjects; however the LNF skills support and enhance learning in all subjects. They underpin learning throughout the school. We aim to equip children with these literacy and numeracy skills, so that they can be as successful as possible in the future.

We believe they form the basis of success in all aspects of school life and are vital to life-long learning


The aim is to give children an awareness of the world in which they live, through studying their immediate environment and by gaining an appreciation of the world at large.
Geographical skills, as outlined in the National Curriculum, can certainly be applied through local “field studies” and classes are each taken to local places of interest. To further enhance their geographical skills the children need access to a variety of resources and materials: atlases, globes, videos, post cards, maps both local and international, compasses and software packages etc.
The junior children are taken on annual outdoor pursuits study visits to Pentrellyncymer Outdoor Education Centre, Nant B H and Glan Llyn Outdoor Education centres.
The aim is to provide children with an appreciation of their past. Present day culture is based on past events and we endeavour to give children a clearer understanding of the World in which they live through a variety of study visits, external speakers and in-house provision.
In Foundation Phase.
Pupils are given opportunities to develop an awareness of:


a) the past and of the ways in which it is different from the present
b) changes in their own lives, families, localities, events, personalities
c) chronology
In Key Stage 2
Pupils are taught about important developments in the history of Wales and Britain in selected periods. Studies are made of local history, personalities, key events – all developed within a chronological framework.

Year 3 - The Celts
Year 4 - The Tudors
Year 5 - The Victorians
Year 6 - World War Two


Our RE teaching reflects the fact that the religious traditions in Great Britain are in the main Christian and Christianity has influenced British History and Culture. Proper account however, is taken of the beliefs and practices of other principal religions represented in this country. This is reflected in our approach to the teaching of RE through the six dimensions listed in the Revised Agreed Syllabus for RE which are stories and events, celebrations, lifestyles, beliefs, questions/concerns/issues and community

This is quite distinct from RE. There has to be an act of “collective worship” which can take place at any time during the normal school day, parents again have the right to withdraw their child from acts of worship but not school notices.
In Bryn Hedydd we have a daily act of worship for infants and juniors, when there is truly a “collective worship” for all. In an attempt to add variety there are occasions when local clergy are invited to participate in our services and likewise children are involved at different times of the year. Parents are invited to these “special services” and their involvement is much welcomed.
Welsh is taught as a second language in Bryn Hedydd and is introduced informally and incidentally from an early age. Familiarity with everyday terminology becomes a common pattern in all classes with a natural progression indicated from year to year. Underlying this informality, is a structured plan incorporating speaking, reading and writing of the Welsh Language.


The Welsh Language is very much part of the Welsh Culture and heritage of Wales. Therefore the language is incorporated into collective worship, musical events, and children actively encouraged to participate in the “Urdd Movement”. Groups of children are escorted to the residential Welsh Language Centre at Glan Llyn, Bala and we regularly send pupils from Year 6 to Ysgol Glan Clwyd for their secondary education. (See headteacher for details)
Music is an essential part of any school and here in Bryn Hedydd we encourage enjoyment of Music through performing and listening. The three major categories of Music are:
a) Performing
b) Composing
c) Appraising
In performing pupils are encouraged to sing/play a range of Music controlling pitch, dynamics, rhythm and phrasing. Composing helps pupils to develop and refine Musical ideas thus producing simple compositions using basic musical elements. By appraising a variety of Music both of their own and others’ pupils gain an appreciation of style and content.


In school we offer all children the opportunity to join the school choir. We also have the support of peripatetic violin, cello and woodwind teachers who visit school weekly and give tuition to a limited number of junior pupils.
One of our visions for the future is to start both a school orchestra and rock band. Could you help?

Like History and Music, art forms part of our culture and heritage. Art is a developing medium and pupils can express their skills and feeling through this subject.


The National Curriculum highlights three areas of development:
a) understanding
b) making
c) investigating
In the first instance children compare their own work with that of others, thus providing an awareness and an understanding of different methods used to create various art forms. Secondly, the pupils can use a range of materials and tools to achieve a variety of outcomes and apply their developing understanding of visual art. Thirdly, through observation and investigation, the children select and record images and ideas further enhancing their understanding and knowledge of creative art.
Therefore the school reflects and displays a commitment to the visual arts by displaying various sources of art and we invite and openly encourage any parent who is able to offer their skills in this department, to give support and assistance whenever possible.

Each class and each child is given access to the computer/laptop/ ipad on a daily basis. Our aim is to allow children to become competent users of ICT equipment and software and to effectively communicate and handle information. 


Ultimately the children will use ICT in all subject areas where they will select information and address its value in supporting their day to day work. For example, in maths and literacy children can enhance their presentation and use software to compliment existing schemes. In art, computers offer the opportunity to expand the individual’s design and graphical skills. Word processing provides an opportunity to create stories/poems, magazines. In Design and Technology children explore the processes of planning and design.


Pupils in Ysgol Bryn Hedydd are afforded the opportunity in their work to develop and apply their knowledge and understanding of the cultural, economic, environmental, historical and linguistic characteristics of Wales as laid down in the National Curriculum.

There will be a programme of curriculum activities mostly integrated into other areas of school life, and provide opportunities for pupils’ personal and social development as well as preventative /diagnostic and remedial activities. The programme aims, for example:-
  • To develop in the child a sensitivity to the needs of others, resulting in social interest and the wish and ability to co-operate with others;
  • To assist pupils in the development and understanding of themselves and of their developing abilities, interests, achievements and opportunities
  • To develop personal confidence in the child’s ability to have purposeful goals in life, to overcome normal obstacles and problems and to arrive at solutions which can be achieved independently.

The child should be a happy and well balanced individual, and be able to exercise self control. He/she should find enjoyment in a variety of aspects of school work, gain satisfaction from achievements and begin to realise that he/she can play an important part in his/her own development.
